Sunday: April 20, 2014

Happy Easter! After a filling family meal today, I sat down to update the SFJ Facebook page. Dr. Petrich's recent puns in class inspired me to give our Facebook fans a chuckle.


After posting to Facebook, I realized that Thursday, I will probably be passing the torch to the new social media team for the Fall semester of Advanced Broadcast Journalism. I asked Estelle if she could make me the Facebook page manager, so I could appoint the next students to be administrators on the page also. Is this really happening? Am I being replaced? I've had a blast being part of the social media team, and it's inspired me to really want a job in the field. I must start researching for job openings.

Since it was a holiday weekend, I didn't think that many people would be on Facebook clicking through our page, so I added a link to listen to our last show today to the page. Maybe we will get more likes today! 



So as I sit here and write this post, I realize that this is my last week with SFJ and my very last week controlling the Facebook page. AND my last week in college.

I cannot believe how much I have learned this semester, especially from working with the Tuesday Broadcast class. In the beginning of the semester, Dr. Petrich said to me that if I ever needed a backup job, that I had enough patience to be a teacher. I personally thought he was crazy, because I never thought of such a thing before. But, now that I am reflecting on the past semester, I can say I fell in love with passing on knowledge that I cherish. It baffles me that I actually know how to operate such intense machinery like in all three studios, know how to work a recorder, edit and playback sound bites, and weed through 20 minute (plus) interviews/two-ways for the show each week. I now even understand the concept of DropBox, and that seemed so foreign to me at the beginning of this class. 

I came into Coverage of Public Affairs knowing none of the previously mentioned, and came out of Advanced with such a feeling of accomplishment. I feared the Beat Story and all its components because it would be my first time out in the field talking to people since my high school reporting days for the newspaper. 

One would think that after Coverage, I would get a feel for what Broadcast Journalism would be like, but I was still nervous. Sabrina was a semester ahead of me, and she always would tell me how stressed she was for her Spots, which made me wonder how the class would be. Once I submitted my first story, I felt pretty confident for the rest of the semester. After many Advanced students at the time told me that the Two-Way is the hardest assignment, I finally experienced it. That was my highest grade, and I actually loved showing off the knowledge I collected over the week of reporting. I felt pretty set for Advanced Broadcast Journalism, and was really excited to mentor, as well as stepping into the shoes of Assignment Editor and Social Media Coordinator. 

But now, as I'm writing this the night before the last class meeting for Advanced, I laugh about my previous qualms. I chose to wait until the night before to finish this post because I knew my feelings would pour out easier onto the page if I waited. 

Through these classes, I fell deeper in love with my major. After countless hours in the recording studios, I also developed a deep interest in radio. I learned so much, including production quality standards and technical operations in the studio, that I really wish the semester didn't have to end. Having a deadline for production, being an engineer, and editing, all have such high stress levels, but also display such importance. Each role has a vital part in the entire production of the show. I personally loved editing Two-Ways and recordings of the Co-Host scripts the best, along with mentoring the Tuesday class. I wish that these hands-on classes began in my freshman year because they really grab one's interest!

I am also very thankful for Dr. Petrich's help and teaching along the way these past three semesters. His kind heart really added a new light to these classes. Many of my previous professors didn't seem to love their job, or what they were teaching. But, Dr. Petrich really has a love for radio, and isn't afraid to show it during class critiquing sessions. When he reads a lead, it puts all of his students to shame. No wonder he has/had a career in radio!

Finally, thank you, Dr. Petrich, for allowing me to be a Social Media Coordinator for SFJ, as well as one of the Assignment Editors. When you approached me for social media, I was thrilled, but even more thrilled when I was told I could also be an Assignment Editor. I value those titles and couldn't be more thankful. I learned to make hard decisions, like what stories make good news, and what to do with stories that didn't come out well enough to be aired. It's a tough call in the end, because I never want to hurt a student's feelings, but when we pull something from the radio show, it's just protecting the show's image. That's also something I've learned. As for being the Social Media Coordinator, I learned how to condense my words into short, catchy phrases. Writing teasers proved to be a challenge in the beginning, but I got the hang of it. Taking photos and updating the Facebook page during class was such a thrill to me. To be able to look back on it will always put a smile on my face. I actually am exploring my options in doing social media as a career too, so thank you for giving me that opportunity this semester!

And if we're talking about social media, I'll add my last blip on Facebook right here then. 



I don't want to say goodbye because I know I''ll definitely want to come back (with Markella too) to visit the Advanced Broadcast class next semester.

Tuesday: April 15, 2014

Oh my gosh. These are the last promos I'll write for SFJ. I just had that realization and I'm not loving reality right now.

anddd...


I wrote these during the critique session and I couldn't believe that this was the last time I'd be part of SFJ before the last production of the show. Where did this semester go?

Before the end of the semester, I said that I wanted a picture of the Tuesday Mentoring group and I was able to snap one and add to Facebook!



During the in-class critique session, I had the chance to see Briana's final spot story for the semester. I've been working with her the entire semester through emails by making suggestions about how to better her stories. She has learned a ton. I can just see the determination she has for getting good and credible interviews too. She sent me a text message with a picture of each email she got from various commissioners and city workers about them denying interviews for her story because the topic is a current center for debate. Pension examinations and possible re-location of Delray Fire Rescue Squad are part of a heated debate currently, and that lead Briana to get 23 total denial emails. I felt her pain!!

Over Thanksgiving break last semester, I was assigned my last spot story for Broadcast and it dealt with Boca City Council. Well, Boca City Hall was closed up until the day before my story was due. I was never so stressed out in my life, and couldn't even enjoy my turkey on Thanksgiving. Instead, I was coming up with swift lines to make sure I could get interviews. So, seeing Briana panic made me realize that panicking over something means you really care; and in that moment, I saw myself in Briana. 

Once the spot presentations were finished, Shanea presented her two-way with Jadarius. Not only was she 30 minutes late to class, but her sound bites were not saved to her jump drive for presentation in class. Well, needless to say it was hard to critique her story content because I couldn't hear any of her soundbites from her laptop at the front of the room. Once we got into the studio, Kylie and I completely pulled apart her two-way and started from the beginning, mapping out exactly what she wanted to say. We didn't change a lot, but we wanted her to be comfortable before recording so it wouldn't take too long in the studio. After coaching and suggesting many things, Kylie realized Shanea wasn't writing anything down. Why? I still don't know. That set the tone for the rest of our time recording. 

Once the two-way recording was complete, Kylie and I spoke with Dr. Petrich after listening to Shanea's sound bites. At this point, we were half-way through editing her two-way. Dr. Petrich made the tough call that we should drop this from the program. I just felt an immediate pain for Shanea. Although she didn't seem too prepared for this task, I could just imagine what she felt like not being in this week's show. 

In a sense, this is a good point for future Broadcast students to learn. If you are not prepared, your story might not make it to the show. And being in the show is a top honor. That's how I look at it at least.

Monday: April 7, 2014

I placed a link on the Facebook page today for fans to listen to the newest show. While updating the page, it began to sink in that I will only have access to this page for another two weeks. I am going to miss updating SFJ's social media. I have also been thinking about who will fill my shoes next semester, and honestly, I wish I knew more kids in the Wednesday class so I could have my input. However, at this point, I'm thinking Chris could be a really good pick. We have become friends and his personal Instgram is full of professional-grade photos of fishing and ocean pictures. I heard that for his job, he goes and shoots commercials and photos, so this is almost second nature to him. Just something for you to think about, Dr. Petrich!



Tuesday: April 8, 2014

Once again, we did not have two-ways this week. I even brought my earphones today just to be able to edit on my laptop with Audacity, but to no avail! I sat through another critique spot session, and today I really saw the divide between the students that care and have learned so much from Broadcast Journalism, and the students that are just gliding through these classes to earn a diploma. It upsets me to see some kids not accept or care about criticism of their stories. They just sit there and take the suggestions like it's a tickle of air past their face.

Before class began, I updated the Facebook page with a snippet of what's to come this week.

Once I posted, Andrea came to ask me for help in the studio. I got to her work station and realized that she still hasn't learned how to save her work correctly. I was like her last semester though, if that is because she wants to be sure and cautious by having an A-Team member save it. That's what Estelle did for me last semester, but I feel like Andrea did it out of laziness. I saw how Dr. Petrich gave her so many suggestions via email for her story script, as Wakaria said she did too, but she didn't really take those to heart. Needless to say, Andrea sat back on her phone while I saved her work. I didn't do it because she wanted me to, I did it to show her how easy it was, but she didn't seem to care. After her in class critique, I helped her re-record her voice tracks and gave her pointers along the way. Her pacing is really good and I like her voice because it's unique.

Hector also presented his spot story in class, and I caught some on video. I uploaded it on Facebook. I found it hilarious how in his critique, I mentioned that he could have gotten crafty with adding ambient sound, but he explained to me why he didn't have any. Saying that because the golf course was closed, he didn't find golf-themed ambient sound relevant. Still, I think that ambient sound could have pushed the story over the top. Thursday: April 10, 2014

I attended production today because I was Headline Newscaster! I was excited to be back in the studio. Before kicking off the day, I snapped a picture of Dr. Petrich at work as he finished the Co-Host script. 


I recorded Co-Hosts Nikki and Charity in the studio and snapped a really cute photo there with Markella "photo-bombing" the picture. During the recording session, I sat back as the girls tackled the script. It made me realize that we all have come so far. These two hardly even stumbled over sentences, and we had some great laughs along the way about pronunciation of only one phrase. Seeing these two girls breeze through the script made me reflect on my time recording, and got me excited for my turn in a little bit!



Right after recording the co-hosts, I re-recorded Ryan's section of the week's Beat Story because he first recorded saying the word "corps" as corpse. It's hilarious how he blamed the pronunciation on his South African accent, and wouldn't admit he made a mistake. It's okay, I wouldn't have teased him! I edited the first part of his original recording before realizing that small mishap. I uploaded a video of Ryan re-recording the beat story onto Facebook. See Facebook for the entire clip.



I've realized that I probably blew up SFJ Facebook fans' pages today with serious posts, so I wanted to upload a photo that showed more of a friendly appeal. I had Tina, Markella, Nikki, Kendrick and Sharlene pose with me for a photo. I think the caption was pretty funny- and I must give Sharlene the credit for that one! 



Saturday: April 12, 2014:

I added a link to the Facebook page for fans to listen to the show we produced! I actually was a little sad with my portion of the recording, just because I felt like it sounded rushed. I wish I could have a do-over. I didn't feel like I went out with a bang, but my Co-Host recordings seemed better earlier in the semester. I guess because as Headline Newscaster, you don't really have a day to prepare like you do with the Co-Host script, so maybe that's what happened. Nonetheless, knowing that there is only one more production of SFJ is really getting me sad. But, I've had such an overall amazing run this semester with SFJ. Wishing I could repeat this class! (I feel like I write that in every post, sorry! It's the truth!)

Week of March 30, 2014

Sunday: March 30, 2014

Tonight, I got news that Sharlene was in the hospital and could not continue overseeing assignment editing this week, so, I was asked to take over. I was very thankful that she and Dr. Petrich believed in me to do such an important task. I emailed Wakaria back to tell her that her stories were not applicable to the content of SFJ, and then had to revise the stories Linda chose for the April 10 show. I clicked through and found a story that was repeated, so after about an hour of searching both the Sun-Sentinel website and the Palm Beach Post website, I found new stories for almost each student that week. I forwarded them to Sharlene and Dr. Petrich, and with two minor story changes, my stories were approved. I literally cannot wait to here the complete show this weekend. I'm so proud that this is pretty much my one chance to control the content on a show. It was a great experience and I thank Sharlene and Dr. Petrich for letting me take that on. Feel better, Sharlene!


Monday: March 31, 2014

I received an email from Dr. Petrich this morning about a Broadcast student's amazing chance to interview FAU's newly elected President. Veronica Santiago got the chance to interview Dr. Kelly and Dr. Petrich wanted to make sure we upload the picture she got after the interview. I uploaded it onto the Facebook page. I was shocked to see a reporter get such a great and memorable interview, pretty much as soon as the new President was elected. It's nice to see our future A-Team members out in the field, and seeing them smile as they report/interview.



Tuesday: April 1, 2014

Dr. Petrich started class by telling the Broadcast class that they were going to have an exam. APRIL FOOL'S! I love the fact that the students weren't upset about it, but laughed it off. It really shows how they're growing up!  

I felt sort of sad today because there were no two-ways scheduled! That's my THING! I absolutely love editing them and recording the kids. They really improved and know exactly what sounds good and bad in a two-way recording session. 

Well, I put my efforts into helping with spot stories today instead, especially Nick's story. Over the weekend, we exchanged emails about editing his draft of his second spot story. I came in to class about an hour early to help him in the studio, putting the last touches on his story before presentation in class. Nick has absorbed so much this semester, and I can see him really enjoying being part of the A-Team next semester. He knew what I was going to pick out in his story as we listened together, and he continued to finish my sentences even when looking at his script. 

In class, I sat through the entire Spot story critique, which I never got to do before because I am always in the studio recording the two-ways. This was interesting because from the first week, I saw such improvement. I remember Dr. Petrich saying, please A-Team, let the Broadcast kids attack each other's story first and then jump in when the time is right, letting them talk first. Well, by the time I had a chance to say my comment, I felt like my words didn't hold value because the kids all took what I was going to say. I can see now why Dr. Petrich gets such joy from teaching. It's because the kids he teaches gain knowledge and are truly interested in journalism. It almost put a tear in my eye. 

Also bringing a tear to my eye was Hector's speech during class time. He said that he feels like he, and the other students, were ready to take on Advanced Broadcast Journalism and that he has learned a lot from the Tuesday A-Team! Yay that's me! Well, it made me realize that my college career is almost over, and that it really can't be over yet. No! I'm never leaving Advanced Broadcast Journalism, Dr. Petrich! 

After that touching talk, I worked through the class break and to the end of class aiding Nick in editing his Spot story, that needed more condensed language. It was tricky, but I think we did really well. I went in and recorded him also. 

In the mean time, I snapped a photo for Facebook of Nick editing his story, and added two more posts- one about the blog Markella created, to generate more page views, and another post about a teaser for the show that week. 






When I was done helping Nick edit and record his story, I went into the studio to record a new Wavelengths promo at Dr. Petrich's request. The best part about this recording session was that both Taylor and I recorded while Hector and Nick were the engineers. It was the first time that Broadcast kids and A-Team members switched positions in the studio. I was so elated. The boys did a great job adjusting levels, and took great direction with adjusting earphone volumes.

I took a listen to the show today and I thought the two, Ryan K. and Addison, sounded great together! What a program. I thought the tension in Germaine's story also stood out tremendously. Hers really stuck with me, because I saw the article that she was basing her story off of and it seemed like a PR style article- the type of article that lets the public know of an event. Very creative angle.

So to kick off the week, I added a link for Facebook fans to listen to the show.


Tuesday: March 25, 2014

It's my favorite day of the week- mentoring day! I attended class and helped Briana convert her files to .WAV files for her two-way. I then listened to Briana's two-way with Jadarius and brought them into the studio to record them. During, Kylie and I helped her edit her script before recording. I cannot believe how much Briana, and Jadarius, have grown since the beginning of the semester. I remember when I had a class with Briana last semester and she was terrified of this class' workload. But to see that she's handling it well, and jumps on her stories as soon as she gets them in her email, she has handled it so nicely. It makes me nostalgic because I wish I was in her shoes again, re-taking Broadcast Jouralism.

While in the studio, I uploaded a video on Facebook of the two-way practice in class. Check the page to watch it.



I also added a promo for her two-way on Facebook.


After the two-way was recorded, I edited it and added in Briana's sound bites while editing those as well. Her interviews seemed like they went really well, as her subjects had a lot of good information to include. Once editing was done, I recorded and edited Kylie, Wakaria and Markella's new Wavelengths promo that Dr. Petrich assigned to us. They then recorded my take on it.



I just had to upload a picture of the partial A-Team while we had our chance to be behind the mic. It's a rare occassion these days! I uploaded it to Facebook.


Friday: March 28, 2014

Tonight I submitted my picks for assignment editing for the last time. It was so bittersweet. I loved having the title of being one of the Assignment Editors because it was very rewarding. To know that you're assigning stories to kids, and they report on it, it's great to see and hear the final products in class the upcoming week. I loved sending out the emails and getting questions back from students because it made me feel really important! What a title to have. I am very thankful.

Since I did not attend the Thursday production class this week, I still wanted to update the Facebook page over the weekend so it did not look like we gave up once the weekend arrived. It hit me today that we only have two more shows to produce. Where did the time go? I will miss this class so much. Ugh, enough about the sad talk. Here's the post I added to Facebook.

Tuesday: March 18, 2014

At the top of class, I quickly worked with Dr. Petrich to formulate a status on the Facebook page, to promote the upcoming show. I just had to respond to it, so I did, with kind and thankful words. It's really amazing to reflect on how much I know about social media and how I continue to update the page. Dr. Petrich has been saying lately how nostalgic he gets looking at the videos and photos I have been uploading, and how since the middle of the semester, he's starting to miss his A-Team already! Dr. Petrich, we're not gone yet!! I was delighted to be able to have him write a personal message to the Facebook fans. I love the idea of seeing something personal from the brains behind the operation.


During class time, I listened to Aramei and Stephanie's two-way in class and commented on ways to add more of a local angle on her story. I thought her sound bite of President Obama in the beginning showed timeliness, but her story was general, so connecting back to the article she was assigned added more of a local aspect.

I then went on to record her two-way, Nick's two-way, and Hector's two-way. Out of them all, I think that Hector's definitely had the most information, but Nick's wasn't far behind. I can see how the two listen to Dr. Petrich and the A-Team to improve thus far in the semester with their writing and speaking skills while in the studio. They both seemed so comfortable in front of the mic, which can sometimes be intimidating. And that's where Aramei fits into this. She seemed very detached from her two-way, and I worried that she only had two sound bites. The article Markella assigned to her was based out of Delray Beach, about Cafe Luna Rosa raising the waitors' wages to $10/hr. Why she didn't go and interview the manager there is beyond me, because that's relative information, even if she wanted to take another angle. I just remember my two-way, and how much information I had going into the studio, that I actually had to eliminate some so my story didn't drag on. That's something she needed to have- more information, because I feel like her story didn't connect to South Florida, even after we tried to tweak her wording.

When I got home, I wanted to add one more thing to the Facebook page. Markella created a website for curious listeners to see and get to know the faces behind SFJ. I love the idea so much. I shared a link for the page on Facebook:



On a side note, I wish more students seemed into this website. Markella sent out a very nice email about asking five or so questions, and their responses would be placed on the website. However, only four or so people responded so far.

Because I did not attend class this Thursday, I wanted to make sure that I still updated the Facebook page. I didn't want to write something too similar to the hint that Dr. Petrich sent out earlier in the week, so it took a while to concoct this teaser. I can't wait to see how this week's show turned out. I bet it sounded amazing with Addison's deep voice as newscaster and Ryan K. as the co-host. Two great voices meshed into one program!

Week of March 9, 2014

Monday: March 10, 2014

... And school's back in session! Well, Spring Break flew by and all I did was get excited over this week! I'm co-hosting again and I couldn't be more thrilled. Today, I uploaded a picture from the Coverage of Public Affairs class that Markella sent to me, since I couldn't be there. I like how now they have a type of Progress Report due, which allows them to present an outline of what's to come for their semester Beat Story project. This gives them more structure, something the Coverage class needed last semester. Group projects always seem to take a turn for the worst, but it's good that this is a driving force for successful works at the end of the semester. 



Tuesday: March 11, 2014

Mentoring day is always my favorite. Today, I got the amazing chance to hear one of the two-ways I assigned come to life. Kimberly and Chris practiced in class, and talked about the entryway beautification plans for Coral Springs. I've never been to that area, and I was excited to see how she'd bring tension to the story, so it wouldn't sound PR-ish. I engineered the two-way recording also. 

Something I had Kim do while in the studio was a little sneaky, but I knew it would work. Because she became nervous as her interview went on in the recording booth, I called her back in alone, and asked her a couple questions relating to her story that she could expand upon. She didn't know I was recording.  I wish someone did that to me when I had my two-way. It was so much easier for her to speak to me as a peer, or a friend, than to sound rehearsed when talking to her co-host. I'm the queen of nerves, so when I saw how relaxed she was talking to me, I wished someone thought of this when I was in her shoes. I ended up using both of her responses to my questions in her two-way edits. It just added a bit more original reporting that was needed in her first draft.

Today I put out a teaser for this week's show on Facebook. I'm counting down the hours until I'm co-host again. I'm actually updating this blog now and annotating the script/ marking inflections at the same time. No, I don't love being part of the Advanced Broadcast class- what made you think that? 




Thursday: March 13, 2014

I attended today's production class, as I was one of the co-hosts. Before I get started talking about today, I want to make mention that I added a photo to the Facebook page of our tasks at hand for the day! This gives the students an idea of what the process on production day is like for SFJ. 


I am going to miss co-hosting so much, and I was very lucky to be able to do that twice this semester. While in the studio, it reminded me that I only knew four people really well going into this semester, and now, I feel like I know everyone's backstory. For example, Addison engineered my co-hosting with Taylor, and we had such a blast together that we all couldn't stop laughing for some odd reason before we got our serious faces on and recorded. It's those unexplainable times that I'll always remember from SFJ. 



After I recorded the co-host script, I edited out all the whispers and mess-ups, and cleaned up the recording before having to leave for my next class in Boca. I really regret signing up for a class that causes me to cut my SFJ production day short. I love the atmosphere on any given Thursday and wish I didn't have to leave and attend a lecture each week. It makes me realize that Journalism is my love, and Sociology (my class that night) is just fine as my minor!


Week of February 23, 2014

This week is a bit of a hiatus for the Advanced Students, myself included, because there is no show this week, and the Broadcast students are taking a Midterm exam.

Even though there wasn't a mentoring session this Tuesday, I still made sure the Facebook page was updated. I added a link to listen to the newest show.


I also had my turn this weekend in finding Two-Way stories to assign to the Broadcast students. I sent an email out Monday morning to the students in the Tuesday class, and sent an email to the two students doing Two-Ways the week after Spring Break. I'm so excited to see how these kids find the tension and turn these articles into interview pieces. It's still surreal to see how I assign an article, and the Broadcast kids bring it to life. 


Thursday: February 27, 2014

Dr. Petrich treated his "A-Team" to lunch today!  Thank you so much for this delicious "nice" Italian lunch! Today we reflected as a class about how far we have come, along with the Broadcast kids too. It's unreal to be at the halfway point in the semester already. Can I repeat these last two semesters, please? I'm going to miss Broadcast and Advanced so much. 

After the relaxing and reflective lunch, we headed into the studios and recorded a couple Wavelengths promos. I was the engineer, along with Markella, for the entire class, as no one was willing to help us with our recordings. We stayed after class to make sure we could record each other too. 

As I sat back recording each student, it's great to hear how far we've all come. Some people had more trouble than others in the beginning with inflections, but now we are all so well trained in picking up where we didn't feel comfortable with something we said. We know when to stop and ask to re-record. 

Along with engineering the recording sessions, I snapped a photo for the Facebook page. It's always nice to be on the other side of the mic, as I watch the Broadcast kids hog it each and every Tuesday! Just kidding about the hogging part, but it's definitely something I miss. 


Because the show is taking a bit of a break from production, because of Spring Break and midterm exams, I made sure to let our Facebook fans know of our hiatus. Is this semester really half over? Where's the rewind button?

Tuesday: February 18, 2014

Chris and Aramei presented their two-way in class today, and I helped critique them. Chris just needs to watch his pacing, and that was something I had to deal with also last semester. I'm from New Jersey, and we tend to speak fast there. So I definitely had to adjust.

After, Kylie and I recorded their two-way. I think Aramei needs to loosen up a bit. I can't tell if it's nerves, or if she's just a really quiet person. But when I sit on the opposite side of the mic and listen in my headphones, she just sounds a bit disconnected. Kylie and I tried to get her to change her voice a bit and add more inflection, but she just wasn't taking to direction.

After them, Hector and Alyssa had their two-way, as I recorded theirs too. I stayed after classs to edit Chris' two-way by cleaning it up a bit. I also stayed late to help Briana find ambient sound for her story, while helping her position it where it made sense in her story. She already had an idea, and with Dr. Petrich peering over my shoulder, he agreed on a slight move. It's so nice to see a student as bright as Briana get the editing process so early in the game. It's a little bit of a teary-eyed moment for me too. My teaching, as well as other A-Team members' and Dr. Petrich's teaching, have been wearing off!

I added a promo for this week's show on Facebook, making sure to highlight the first Beat Story being aired from the Fall semester of Coverage of Public Affairs. I'm sure they're excited!



I also uploaded a picture of the in-class practice session for Aramei and Chris' two-way.


Earlier today, I received an email from Sharlene with the list of Approved Story Assignments for this week's show. I sent an email out to the Social Media Team including the document containing the story links, and made sure each member had a task of uploading each social media outlet with those promos.

Week of February 9, 2014

Tuesday: February 11, 2014

Yesterday, I sent an email out to the Social Media Team including this week's promos for the show. I included that I would be updating the Facebook with the promo, and that each member should update their social media outlets as well with current information for this week. 

I sat in the practice session of Jadarius and Kim's two-way, and then recorded them in the studio. Jadarius did a wonderful job on his two-way. I was concerned while assigning the story to him because he said the area in which he wanted to cover was Broward County. So, after confirming that with him, I chose a random but impactful charter school story in the Wilton Manors area for him to cover. 

After Jadarius recorded, I recorded Andrea and Ken's two-way. I could tell that Andrea will be putting forth more effort than last semester, as I remember in Coverage of Public Affairs, she tried to ask Markella and I about our ideas for the beat story project. She almost did the same topic as me too, but I changed mine last minute so we wouldn't have the same. But, I also preferred my second choice about the texting and driving ban anyway. 

Immediately after the recording, I began deleting the mistakes and multiple takes in between; and boy there were a lot of them. But, that's okay. I'm sure my two-way recording was a mess. I was so nervous in the beginning I couldn't even remember if I hit all of my bullet points I prepared. 

In class I updated the Facebook with a promo for the upcoming show. 

...As well as linking the first week's show to the Facebook page. I thought by doing this, we could give the current students an easier way to access the show. I know googling "South Florida Journal" doesn't turn up many accurate results in finding where we put our content. 



While in class, I snapped a photo of Hector getting his spot story critiqued before finalizing it for the show. He seems to not take criticism too well, and always offers a back-comment of why his story is worded as such. Hey, it's good to have confidence in your work.

This was the first week I attended the editing day for South Florida Journal. I filled in as Co-Host for Robert since he was absent. I did such a cold read of the script, and I just was so happy to be in that room again. What was even better was that I was Co-Hosting with my a really great friend! I've known Markella for almost three years and this was great that she and I could experience being Co-Hosts together.

Immediately after my recording with Markella, I jumped on the editing and dropped in the two-way bites into the actual recording with multitrack. I love this portion of Thursdays and see myself doing this each week.

As a new feature of the Facebook page, I wanted to try adding a video promo for each week's upcoming show. I recorded this one with Markella for this week's show, as we're Co-Hosting.

Tuesday: February 4, 2014

It's a huge honor to be one of the Assignment Editors for South Florida Journal. On February 3, I assigned my first round of stories to the Tuesday Group 2 students for their two-ways. Then today, I sent the assignments to Group 2 students doing two-ways in the Wednesday class. Picking stories was a bit harder than I thought. Picking two-ways meant that I had to find stories that had a bit more tension that say a possible spot story article. I was looking for familiar heated debates, and ones where there was obvious tension too. I didn't want to spring hard article and issues at the students right away. Those are for the end of the semester when they become more confident!

The in-class practice session for Germaine's two-way with Briana went really well. I was blown away with how much Germaine knew, and how much thought/work she put into this practice session. I knew from the first day of class that she had a lot of potential. It made me wonder if I sounded that good when I had a two-way last semester! 

I then was the engineer and ears with Markella in the studio as we recorded their two-way. 

After that, I sat in with Stephanie and Shanea in that two-way. It was a little rough to get through, but I aided in trying to organize her wording and questions a bit. I figure that with time, both of them could soak in a bit more of what it's like to be Broadcast-like, stylistically speaking. 

I then updated the Facebook page with a promo for the first week's show, and took 2 videos of Germaine's two-way: one of the practice session and one while in the studio as teasers. 







Week of January 26, 2014

Over this past weekend, I edited Briana's Mock Spot Story via email. Nick also emailed me with his story. I can't be too critical because I'm a semester ahead and have a bit more knowledge of what makes a good spot story. So, I commented with ways to approach the story for corrections without actually saying what was wrong in each. I don't want to be that person that the students come to and expect me to do their work for them. I learned and found my voice in Broadcast, now it's their turn!

Tuesday: January 28, 2014

Because many students hadn't finished their Mock Spot Stories last week, we continued to work on them in class. I helped Briana record, edit and place together her story in the recording studios. Briana and I are familiar with each other from a previous class, and we tend to work really well together. She took such initiative today to take the mouse from my hand and edit herself, which I thought to be amazing. More and more kids seem to be less afraid of this new technology. I remember being afraid of messing my soundtracks and bites up. But that was before I knew of an "undo" button!

After Briana, Hector was ready to record so I helped him as well. I previously helped him focus his story while in class. He sounds like he has a lot of outside knowledge that he'll try to incorporate into his stories this semester. He said he worked at a radio station, or something similar, editing sound bites and things. Maybe that'll give him a leg-up this semester!

I stayed after class with Briana and Hector to have them play their stories and get a small critique from Dr. Petrich. I was so pleased to see the look on both of their faces when their stories came to an end. Briana was smiling from ear to ear, while Hector was doing the same, but made a comment about a slight stutter he made in the recording. Oh, he is a perfectionist and I see that I might have rubbed off on him already! Oh no!

During the time in which Hector was editing his Mock Story, I took some Behind the Scenes footage in the recording studio which I shared on Facebook. To view the video, please visit the Facebook page.


I also added a blurb on Facebook to see who would be our main audience this semester (as far as people who like the content) and noticed it was mostly kids who either are in Broadcast now, or are graduated. I was hoping to see some actual fans of the show outside of the University.



After class, I sent an email to my fellow Social Media Gurus and included a list of our names and tasks for updating social media each day of the week. I also attached the Approved Story Assignments for this week's show, that way we could all update each social media outlet with the most current information.

WORKSHOP

Today was our final workshop, and it was more of a wrap-up. We discussed what we felt we needed to still learn more about, and that was the billboard. So, in between getting into groups, we tried our hand at creating the billboard.

I wrote and edited a portion of the Co-Host script to include the tag lines for liking and following South Florida Journal on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Vine. I think that will be a vital portion of the show where a listener will recognize that we are becoming more social media friendly, and that soon we will be fully involved in it all.

I also wrote a promo for Facebook to be used the next week, and recorded a similar version for Owl Radio. Nikki and I sent an email to Owl Radio Station Manager, Anastacia. I'm excited to be teaming up with Owl Radio. I think that this will boost listener audiences! If only I could walk through the breezeway where this will be playing and hear my voice. That would be so cool.

I conducted a Social Media Team meeting in class today, and we discussed who would update what media platform each time we meet for class. We decided that we want to split up the roles of updating Facebook, Twitter, Vine and Instagram

Just for a new fresh vibe on the Facebook page, I uploaded a video that shows that the A-Team really is a family who still is young at heart and likes to joke around.
